If you experience a loss of power, lighting, heating or hot water, or if you suspect an electrical emergency because of unusual sounds or smells around electrical outlets or switchboards, do NOT delay – call Hit The Switch IMMEDIATELY on 1300 205 205 for rapid
response and on the spot advice.
First things first, if someone has experienced an electric shock or if
there’s risk of a fire, call 000 immediately to seek medical assistance or emergency services.
If – and only if – there’s no danger of you or someone else being electrocuted, switch off the power and pull out the plug. If this can’t be done safely by hand, use something that won’t conduct electricity, preferably rubber or cured dry wood (such as a broom stick). Never use anything metal or wet or damp. If necessary, go to your switchboard and turn off the power at the mains.
Do NOT touch an electrical victim until they are completely free of the current. Once they are, if you have been trained in CPR, commence resuscitation procedures.
If there’s a small fire, smother them with a fire blanket and/or an extinguisher. If it is 100% safe to do so, turn off and unplug the appliance ASAP.
NEVER throw water on an electrical fire as water is an excellent conductor of electricity and you could experience a fatal shock. Similarly never use water on a hot fat or cooking oil fire (such as in a frypan) as the oil will explode savagely.
Remember the “stop, drop and roll” procedure to extinguish flames if your clothing has caught on fire.
If and when everyone is safe, call Hit The Switch’s 24 hour electrical services on 1300 205 205 and we will despatch an emergency electrician straight away.
