WHAT TO DO IN AN ELECTRICAL EMERGENCY

First things first, if someone has experienced an electric shock or if
there’s risk of a fire, call 000 immediately to seek medical assistance or emergency services.

If – and only if – there’s no danger of you or someone else being electrocuted, switch off the power and pull out the plug. If this can’t be done safely by hand, use something that won’t conduct electricity, preferably rubber or cured dry wood (such as a broom stick). Never use anything metal or wet or damp. If necessary, go to your switchboard and turn off the power at the mains.

Do NOT touch an electrical victim until they are completely free of the current. Once they are, if you have been trained in CPR, commence resuscitation procedures.

IN CASE OF A SMALL FIRE

If there’s a small fire, smother them with a fire blanket and/or an extinguisher. If it is 100% safe to do so, turn off and unplug the appliance ASAP.

NEVER throw water on an electrical fire as water is an excellent conductor of electricity and you could experience a fatal shock. Similarly never use water on a hot fat or cooking oil fire (such as in a frypan) as the oil will explode savagely.

Remember the “stop, drop and roll” procedure to extinguish flames if your clothing has caught on fire.

If and when everyone is safe, call Hit The Switch’s 24 hour electrical services on 1300 205 205 and we will despatch an emergency electrician straight away.

ADVICE FROM AN EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN: 7 WAYS YOU CAN KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE & SOUND

  • Never use electrical appliances that are damaged or have frayed cords, broken plugs, etc. Likewise do not attempt to repair them yourself. It’s just not worth the risk.
  • Completely turn off appliances – particularly toasters and electric kettles – when not in use, or when you’re not home.
  • Never attempt to remove bread stuck in a toaster without switching it off first.
  • Keep exhaust fans and clothes dryers free of lint and dust and ensure appliances have “breathing space” so they don’t overheat.
  • Avoid using electrical appliances & extension cords anywhere around water (eg, sinks, bathtubs, swimming pools, etc).
  • Keep trees trimmed and away from power lines, and watch ladders, poles etc when working near overhead power lines. Look up and live!
  • Know where your switchboard (also called power boards and fuse boxes) is and clearly label all switches, fuses and circuit breakers, so you can shut them down if necessary.
