What’s Involved in Rewiring a House?

When exactly do you need to consider rewiring a house?

You may have recently arranged a Home Safety Assessment and the Master Electrician/Inspector informed you that your wiring is dodgy.

Or you may be buying an older-style Melbourne home and need to know that you are going to be safe and sound.

You may even be selling an old home and want to add “Fully Rewired” as a selling point.

Or it may be that you’re experiencing the tell-tale signs that a house rewiring is imminent, such as:

  • lights dimming, particularly at night
  • circuit breakers going off way too often
  • safety switches that trip easily
  • outlets and cords that get warm when in use
  • mild electrical shocks from appliances, switches & sockets
  • fuses that blow regularly (if you have fuses, we recommend a switchboard upgrade)
  • and frequent power outages.

Whichever way you decide that you need new house rewiring, it will pay you to know exactly what’s involved in rewiring a house.

FIRST THINGS FIRST, REWIRING A HOUSE WON’T COME CHEAP

Rewiring a house is a long and involved process that can take 4 or 5 days to accomplish by a qualified home electrician.

With your family’s safety at stake – not to mention future generations of families – there can be absolutely NO shortcuts.

Nor will Hit The Switch ever compromise on quality.

So if you’re looking for the quickest or the cheapest house rewiring in Melbourne, we guarantee you it won’t be Hit The Switch.

If on the other hand you want your home rewired safely, and the rewiring done properly, you can trust us to do a first class job.

And as anyone who’s ever had a bad experience with a tradie will tell you, that’s much better than saving a few bucks.

REWIRING A HOUSE, STEP BY STEP

The first thing Hit The Switch will do before rewiring a house is conduct a full electrical assessment.

This is crucial because on the surface, things can appear perfectly OK and it’s only when you delve deeper that you can notice problems.

For example, you might have a brand new switchboard, but upon closer inspection, we might discover that that the existing wiring is not up to scratch...visibly worn or cracked cabling, perished black rubber cables, or – worst of all – metal conduit with cloth cabling.

We’ll also look out for cracked and broken General Purpose Outlets (power points), damaged light fittings and electrical issues in outdoor areas.

When we get up into the ceiling and other inaccessible places, that’s when it becomes perfectly clear whether or not you need your house rewired.

As part of a check-listed report we’ll supply you with, we’ll take photos to show you where the problems are and point out areas where there are potential safety risks.

Then comes the big question...

“HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO REWIRE MY HOUSE?”

Once you’ve gone through the report, we’ll supply you with an all-inclusive estimate, detailing precisely what is included, item by item.

Obviously, there is no “one-size-fits-all” cost of rewiring a house...each home has to be assessed on its own merits based on aspects such as size, age, accessibility and more.

As we said, it won’t be cheap; our estimate won’t be the cheapest OR the dearest however rest assured, if there are ways to save you money – without compromising on safety or quality – we will do so.

If a whole-house re-wire is more than you can afford or if the disruption will prove too much, we can do it in stages...although this is NOT our preferred option.
