Understanding the Electrical Safety Standard
The Electrical Safety Rental Minimum Standard came into force in Victoria on 29 March 2023. It describes new standards for switchboards, circuit breakers and safety switches installed in rental properties. Here is a quick summary.
- A licensed electrician must complete an electrical safety check every two years.
- The licensed electrician must provide an electrical safety report.
- A copy of the electrical safety report must be kept and made available to a tenant upon request.
- The electrical safety check will include an assessment of the existing switchboard.
- The switchboard must be modern enough to have a safety switch fitted. If it is not, it will need to be upgraded to fit a safety switch.
- There must be a safety switch fitted to each electrical circuit at the switchboard.
- Above all, a Certificate of Electrical Compliance is a must for all electrical repairs or modifications completed as a result of the safety check and submitted to Energy Safe Victoria.
